The article I read was "Snake Robot on Mars?". The article is about NASA landing four robots on the moon. They can dig up soil and analyze, or bring it back to earth. They have six wheels and robotic arms to do that. The four names of the robots that have landed on the moon are Sojourner (1997), Spirit (2003), Opportunity (2003), and Curiosity (2013). The snake part of the robots would be the arm. The arms can actually detatch and collect soil samples that way. They are trying to get one of these on the planet Mars so it can reach in tight spots between rocks that the Mars Rover can't reach. This would make it a lot easier to analyze the soil on Mars.
This could affect society by showing us if there is water in the soil on Mars. Mars is probably the most likely planet to have life on it besides Earth. If in any case humans need to evacuate the Earth, possibly in hundreds of years when the sun burns out, to go to Mars we could know if they have water. This technology could also help us by simply trying to find extra terrestrial life on Mars or any other planet if we send a probe to it. They are currently working on a probe or prototype to send to Mars to help collect more data about the planet or any other planet. That is how I think the snake robot could affect technology in the future.
The article I read was "Dogs' Behavior Could Help Design Social Robots". Forty one dogs were tested with a robot to see what category that would be categorized under; the ones interacted with the robot and the ones who left the robot alone. The social dogs would then watch a human interact with the robot. They then left the dogs alone with a people bot which has two arms and four fingers on each hand. The robot was either programmed to act like a human and call the dog's name or ignore it. If the people bot would call the dog's name it would just stare at it, most likely because the dog hadn't developed a strong relationship with the robot.
This technology could help our future by showing us how dogs interact with strangers. If your dog is having problems when people come over your house, you could test your dog with a people bot. The people bot could call the dog's name and watch it's reaction. If it starts to attack the people bot than there is clearly a problem. If your dog acts normal with the people bot then your dog might be going through a phase. You could also test this the opposite way. If you just built a new robot, then you could see how it acts with animals. If it ignores them it could be good or bad depending on how you programmed it. That is how this technology could affect our future or society.
The article I read was "Better Robot Vision: Neglected Statistical Tool Could Help Robots Better Understand the Objects in the World Around Them". Basically the long title of the article means the ability to recognize what a certain object is. An MIT graduate, Jared Glover, is exploiting a statistical construct called the Bingham distribution. Through this process, he is trying to teach robots how to play ping pong. The visual test to this experiment is very poor and almost not needed. Glover designed a software to help his research since he is strictly about the Bingham distribution. His software is primarily made to speed up his calculations.
This technology could help society or our future by a few ways. If Jared Glover gets his technology to have better object recognition then this technology could be very useful. Robots that are meant for helping people could be able to identify objects and take care of them like a normal person would. Also if there are spaces that you can not reach in your house or if there are spaces where a different robot can't reach, you could send a small robot with good object recognition into the space to retrieve what you need. Good object recognition on a robot would be very helpful. That is how this technology could help society or our future.
The article I read was on a robotic device that could mimick tendons, muscles and ligaments to help speed up ankle disorders or injuries. The biometric device help reeducate the neural system if there is a disorder to help the foot become stable. the biometric device is less bulky than other similar products. the product is more difficult to control but it is capable of three dimensional control, instead of exoskeletons that can only do 1 dimensional control. an exoskeleton is also a lot bigger, which would limit the capabilities of the user.
This technology would significantly help and speedup the process of foot rehabilitation and injuries. If an athlete were to get hurt, this could help them recover from the injury faster and have them ready to go. This can also help walking disorders, changing a lot of people's lives. If they were to they were to have this on they would be able to walk normally and have the ability of a three dimensional rotation of their foot.
The video I watched was on how robots or mechanical counterparts could end up replacing 25 percent of soldiers in the U.S army. A general from Vrginia stated that it would cut down on budget costs and also increase efficiency under stressful conditions. Robots such as unmanned vehicles could be seen on the front line. But robots would be more for transportation purposes to reduce time travel in between places. They are also developing an iron man like suit to provide superhuman strength with ballistic protection.
If robots were to be deployed in war, less people would have to die or leave their families behind for a long period of time. soldiers would get to stay home and support their families directly and not be in harms way. Robots in war would also decrease the chances of soldier mistakes. It would also decrease the chances of soldier casualties too. If an iron man type suit were to be built and developed, this would offer significant advantages not only to war efforts, but construction jobs and such. The technology could help heavy duty jobs become easier and quicker to do, like building a new school or such.
The article that I read was about a micro-muscular device that can catapult object 50 times heavier than itself over 5 times its length in less than a blink of an eye (60 milliseconds). it's a thousand times more powerful than a human muscle and is hoped to become faster and stronger than what it is already capable to do. the motor shows a rpm (revolutions per minute) of over 200,000! The device can reconfigure itself into a different shape to adjust to the object that it identifies. the device contains vanadium dioxide which is an conductor at low temperatures but becomes an insulator at 67 degrees Celsius.
This device shows great potential for applications that need a lot of power in such a small space. The device can be used in electronics that have high demanding set ups that require a small space. this could be used in cars and helicopters to improve efficiency and power levels. The vanadium dioxide crystal can be used to contract to revolutionize electronic conductivity.
The article I read on singularity was very interesting. Some scientists say that robots could pass human learning capabilities in just 16 years. there are many different opinions how singularity will happen and what will happen afterwards. the optimistic believe that humans will be able to upgrade to cybernetic parts and become better and faster at the things they do or want to do. But some believe that singularity will be the reason why the human race will cease to exist. The believe that the robots are able to survive things the human race can't and that's how robots will take over. But some also believe that we as humans we de-evolutionize ourselves. That we provide the energy but everything else does the work.
Most scientists do agree that it will happen in our lifetime, but there are some that do not. The scientists that do think singularity will happen in our lifetime all have different opinions on w t will happen and what will happen. almost like politicians, their are debates on how it will happen. this would certainly change human life for sure, but it could be in a bad way or a good way. If it ends up like a Terminator or Matrix type outcome then the human race would be severely retarded of there progress on life and technology. But if the outcome were to be good, then the human race would be heavily advanced in technology and capabilities of the human race.
